Kryštof Strejc is one of the leading figures of the young generation of Czech figurative painters. He is a graduate of the painting studio led by Jiří Černický and Marek Meduna / Michal Novotný at UMPRUM in Prague. His painting style is characterized by a bold, expressive use of color, the layering of planes, and a striking formal stylization. Strejc’s work is based on an established iconography and organized into thematic cycles, with variations within each series emerging primarily through subtle shifts in color and composition. In the past he focused primarily on animal motifs imbued with ancient symbolic layers. He rendered these in a decorative, two-dimensional style, overlapping the motifs in shallow planes, often without clear spatial or narrative contexts. This approach to composition is a defining feature of his more recent works as well. Decorative floral motifs are another typical element of Strejc’s canvases, either overlaying the main scene or as the central theme of the painting itself. In his most recent works, the artist intertwines these floral structures with the human figure, rendered - in the context of his body of work to date - with unusual realism. The painting Echoes in Bloom can be interpreted as an inner landscape - not a specific place but a space of silence and contemplation. The human figure here does not represent a real person; rather, it is a symbol of human presence within the pictorial space. The work thus functions more as a projection screen, whose meaning is only fully realized when it encounters the viewer’s own experiences, emotions, and imagination.
