Muzika’s early work was shaped by the profound influence of Bohumil Kubišta, whose retrospective exhibition in February 1920 made an extraordinary impact on the entire emerging generation of Czech painters. Particular attention was drawn to Kubišta’s efforts to unite modern artistic expression with deeper spiritual content, as well as to his paintings from 1910–1911, including the celebrated Old Prague Motif. These works, in particular, anticipated many of the characteristics of Czech Magic Realism and became an important source of inspiration for František Muzika and others. From Kubišta’s legacy, Muzika developed above all the principle of an inner illumination of radically simplified forms, through which the depicted reality transcends mere description and acquires an intense, almost spectral quality. The clarity and flatness of the individual motifs, arranged into pictorial planes with carefully graduated rhythm, also reveal the influence of the spatial principles of Synthetic Cubism. These early works, which include Karlův most, already demonstrate Muzika’s desire to penetrate beyond the visible surface of reality and capture the hidden life of seemingly ordinary things. Architecture and objects are not merely recorded but transformed into vehicles for a distinctive interplay of light and emotional tension.

In Charles Bridge, the artist chose a challenging urban subject, combining part of the bridge’s architecture with the surrounding buildings, the Old Town Bridge Tower and the dome of the Church of St Francis of Assisi. The individual structures are radically simplified, almost monumentalised, and compressed into a compact composition articulated vertically. The dark masses of houses and towers contrast with the cool blue sky, illuminated by clouds and a slender crescent moon. The moonlight and the muted, dusky palette lend the familiar Prague panorama an unusual air of mystery. Charles Bridge is thus depicted not as a specific urban view, but rather as a space of memory or dream. Muzika achieved a remarkable emotional intensity, bringing the painting close to both contemporary Magic Realism and Neoprimitivist tendencies. Both currents played a significant role in the early development of the young post-war generation of artists associated with Devětsil, of which Muzika was a member and with which he also exhibited. The present work thus brings together the influence of pre-war Czech modernism and a new poetic vision of reality: through the artist’s eyes, the familiar city is transformed into a silent, almost surreal poetic space.

The artist’s inventory number 22 is preserved on the reverse. The painting has been exhibited and reproduced on numerous occasions. Its first owner was the sculptor Bedřich Stefan. It was assessed during consultations with Prof. J. Zemina and PhDr. R. Michalová, Ph.D. An expert opinion by PhDr. K. Srp is attached.
