Jan Svoboda is a member of Umělecká beseda (the Art Forum). He has held more than 180 solo exhibitions and several group shows (mainly with Rostislav Pospíšil, Jindřich Štreit, and his son Ondřej Svoboda). He has been engaged in art since the early 1980s, at first alongside his regular employment, and fully since 1990. His main medium is painting (acrylic on canvas); he occasionally works with sculpture, drawing, and one‑off furniture pieces. For many years, the motifs of his paintings were figures, objects, and symbols treated in a condensed, archetypal way, often with humour. Around 2010, there was a shift away from concrete objects toward geometric forms, lines, dots, and curves. Today, horizons and colour fields dominate his work.
