Behind Back

The work of internationally renowned photographer Bára Prášilová is characterized by a consistent signature style based on considerable stylization and postproduction as well as a carefully constructed visual imagination. In her photographs, the artist works with a complex scenographic conception of the space, creating custom props and costumes to build an aesthetically unified environment. Her work combines technical perfection, aestheticization, symbolism, and a provocative surrealistic elusiveness and dreaminess. In addition to photography, Prášilová also works with video, which often expands on the themes of her photographs and lends them an additional temporal and semantic dimension. She is also active in the field of commercial and commissioned work, and her notable projects have included, for example, an award-winning campaign for the National Theatre in Prague. She has received numerous accolades for her work, including from prestigious international competitions such as the Hasselblad Masters and the Clio Awards, and she has twice been named Photographer of the Year at the Czech Grand Design Awards. The photograph Behind Back was created as part of the Circles series, in which the artist works with the symbolism of the circle. In this series the circle serves not only as a prominent compositional motif but also as a philosophical symbol relating to the very essence of life. The photograph brings together the cyclical nature of existence, the interconnectedness of things, and the theme of care - which together shape our identity - and concentrates them into a multilayered, dreamlike image.
