Kristýna and Marek Milde are a Czech artist duo who have been based in Brooklyn, New York, for many years. They have been working exclusively as a duo since 2011, systematically exploring the intersections of nature and urban space, with a pronounced environmental focus. In their work, nature is often represented by the variously shaped motif of the tree, which, as a symbol rich in meaning, enters into complex relationships with metropolitan culture, public space, and the intimacy of the home. The artists highlight the interconnectedness of these ecosystems while also drawing attention to the apparent rift between the “urban” and the “natural” that opens up in the mind of the city dweller. Kristýna and Marek Milde work across media, from installations and objects to photography, animation, and collage. Their installations are often participatory in nature and actively involve viewers in the process of completing the work. Mirroring is part of a broader series titled Motherboards, which the artists have been working on since 2023. A stylized image of an urban landscape—tree canopies intertwining with power lines—is etched onto a printed circuit board. The composition is formally unified and symmetrically mirrored, fashioned to resemble electronic circuits on a typical green substrate. The work was commissioned for the artists’ solo exhibition The Call of the Forest, which took place at Kunsthalle Praha in 2025.
