Congo

Alžběta Jungrová is one of the prominent figures in contemporary Czech photography and a founding member of the 400 ASA group. Her work is rooted in reportage and documentary photography, through which she has captured armed conflicts, social issues and human stories in various parts of the world. In recent years, she has increasingly focused on fine art photography, exploring the human figure, corporeality and emotions while experimenting with printing techniques and materials. Her work has been exhibited at venues including the Saatchi Gallery in London, the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art and the National Gallery Prague.

The photograph captures the solitary figure of a child on the coast of the Congo, facing the vast expanse of the ocean. The artist works with the striking contrast between the small human silhouette and the seemingly infinite space of water and sky, lending the image a quiet, contemplative atmosphere. The black-and-white treatment suppresses the specificity of the location, focusing attention instead on light, the structure of the landscape and the fleeting nature of the captured moment. The photograph thus functions not merely as a document of the journey, but as a more universal reflection on the relationship between humankind and nature.
