Bedřich Havránek studied under Antonín Mánes, Christian Ruben and Maximilian Haushofer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. Following his academic training, he remained consistently faithful to a combination of Realistic and Romantic approaches to painting. Contemporary criticism responded to this characteristic both positively and negatively, particularly in relation to the quality of detail, the meticulous treatment of individual surfaces and his faithful rendering of colour tonality.
From his student years onwards, Havránek spent much of his time travelling. Like many of his contemporaries, he frequently depicted Bavarian lakes such as Chiemsee, Königssee and Obersee. Throughout his life, however, he also worked extensively in Bohemia, painting landscapes along the Elbe, Vltava River and Sázava River. The picturesque Sázava valley likewise served as inspiration for the present work.
Here we encounter an idyllic rural landscape dominated by the motif of a humble fisherman’s cottage situated on the riverbank. The pictorial surface is enriched by carefully rendered silhouettes of rolling hills as well as a foreground filled with remarkable details: among them a flock of ducks, various flowers, curious rock formations, a decaying rowing boat and, not least, an idyllic staffage scene featuring a mother and child playing in the dust of the road. Havránek also demonstrates exceptional mastery in his handling of light, which enhances the atmosphere and conveys the particular mood of a specific day.
Already in the year of its creation, the work was presented at the annual exhibition of Krasoumná jednota (1863, cat. No. 192) and was discussed in the contemporary press. It also featured in the artist’s solo exhibition at the National Gallery Prague, where it was published and reproduced in the accompanying catalogue (Bedřich Havránek, 1821–1899, exhibition catalogue, Prague, 1985, cat. No. 69, p. 112, fig. 67). Based on the above, it may be stated without doubt that the present work ranks among the key achievements of Havránek’s artistic production. The painting is presented in an attractive period frame. During consultations, it was assessed by Prof. R. Prahl, CSc., and Mgr. M. Dospěl, PhD. An expert opinion of PhDr. Š. Leubnerová is attached.
