The <a href="https://www.galeriekodl.cz/cs/aukce/52/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spring auction of Galerie KODL</a> will present a collection of 217 outstanding works that trace the evolution of Czech visual art over the past three centuries. The oldest work offered will be a rare cabinet painting by the Rococo artist Norbert Grund. French plein-air landscape painting is echoed in the works of the distinctive Czech artist Anton&iacute;n Chittussi, represented by four gallery pieces from his most highly regarded period. Among other museum-quality works is <a href="https://artslimit.com/item/7174" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Quiet Bay</a> by Jakub Schikaneder from the 1910s. The 19th-century section is further enriched by notable international artists, including Charles Cl&eacute;ment Calderon and Louis Douzette. The Czech artists active in Paris at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries are represented primarily by Franti&scaron;ek Kupka and the Impressionist landscape painter V&aacute;clav Radimsk&yacute;.
The 1920s and the Czech interwar avant-garde are represented by works such as <a href="https://artslimit.com/item/7219" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Glass Tray and a Fish</a> by Anton&iacute;n Proch&aacute;zka and <a href="https://artslimit.com/item/7197" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Still Life with Watermelon</a>&nbsp;(1929) by Emil Filla, dating from his celebrated &ldquo;white period.&rdquo; V&aacute;clav &Scaron;p&aacute;la is strongly represented with ten oil paintings, alongside works by Otakar Kub&iacute;n and Miloslav Chlup&aacute;č. The oeuvre of Josef Lada will be recalled through a total of eight lots. The auction will also feature a rare early Cubist work by Josef Čapek, <a href="https://artslimit.com/item/7154" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Drunkard</a>, first exhibited at the renowned Second Exhibition of the Tvrdo&scaron;&iacute;jn&iacute; in January 1920. An exceptional example of interwar Surrealism is <a href="https://artslimit.com/item/7189" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Landscape</a> (1935) by Yves Tanguy, whom the celebrated theorist Andr&eacute; Breton described as a painter of &ldquo;captivating aerial, subterranean, and maritime elegances.&rdquo;
The immediate postwar period is represented by the frequently exhibited <a href="https://artslimit.com/item/7134" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Good Samaritan</a> by Franti&scaron;ek Tich&yacute;, Kamil Lhot&aacute;k&rsquo;s painted Paris diary, and the large-format panoramic work on paper <a href="https://artslimit.com/item/7139" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Field in Brie</a>&nbsp;by Josef &Scaron;&iacute;ma, which captures the transition from the meditative clarity of luminous plains to the darker and more material character of his later work. Art of the second half of the 20th century is represented by figures such as Franti&scaron;ek Muzika, Adriena &Scaron;imotov&aacute;, Karel Malich, Vlastimil Bene&scaron;, Jiř&iacute; Načeradsk&yacute;, and Olbram Zoubek. A significant highlight of the auction is also the glass sculpture <a href="https://artslimit.com/item/7195" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Blue Sky</a> by the renowned duo Stanislav Libensk&yacute; and Jaroslava Brychtov&aacute;. A unique work that defines the entire spring auction is Theodore Pi&scaron;těk&rsquo;s <a href="https://artslimit.com/item/7089" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Self-Portrait at the Window 1</a>&nbsp;from the 1980s, in which the central motif &ndash; a veiled, averted face &ndash; reflects the era of harsh normalization and lack of freedom.
The auction concludes with a selection of contemporary artists, including Jiř&iacute; Georg Dokoupil, Veronika Holcov&aacute;, Martin Janeck&yacute;, MAATTY, Pavla Malinov&aacute;, Michal Mr&aacute;z, Jan Pi&scaron;těk, Zdenka Reinerov&aacute;, Michael Rittstein, Jaroslav R&oacute;na, M&aacute;ria &Scaron;varbov&aacute;, and Lubom&iacute;r Typlt.
The spring auction will also include charity auctions. Works by artists such as Michal Cimala, Jakub &Scaron;paňhel, and Vladim&iacute;r V&eacute;la will be auctioned in support of the Prague Spring Art Salon. To benefit the non-profit organization Centrum Paraple, works by Karel Gott, Martin Herold, Ota Janeček, Jan Mikulka, and Ad&eacute;la Oliva will be available.
