The panorama of his native Hrusice was among Josef Lada’s most favourite motifs. The characteristic view of the Church of St Wenceslas on a hillock, surrounded by blossoming trees, cottages with thatched roofs, and paths winding through the gently undulating landscape of Central Bohemia, recurs in many variations throughout his work. In these scenes, he was able to capture the changing seasons as well as the moods of the countryside with exceptional sensitivity. Hrusice in Spring, however, differs from most of his other works in the absence of children and their games. The only sign of life is a hen pecking along the path – a subtle reminder of human presence and the village’s habitation. Muted earthy tones, complemented by the whiteness of blossoming trees and plastered gables, evoke the fresh, still cool atmosphere of early spring.

The work was created during the German occupation of Czechoslovakia, when Lada returned ever more frequently to the motif of Hrusice as a constant source of inspiration and a personal refuge. His characteristic stylisation – evident in the simplified architecture, the decoratively conceived trees, and the clear compositional structure – is not an expression of naivety but a conscious continuation of folk tradition and the illustration techniques. In its historical context, this idealised image of the Czech village also acquired a symbolic meaning as a bearer of national memory and continuity.

The work comes from the collection of the distinguished art historian Professor Antonín Matějček. It was assessed in consultation with Prof. J. Zemina and PhDr. R. Michalová, PhD. An expert opinion of PhDr. P. Pečinková, CSc., is attached (quoted: “[…] It belongs to the cycle of Lada’s paintings following on from the triptych Bohemian Landscape, depicting the countryside and rural life across the individual seasons. […]”).
