A rare opportunity for collectors is presented by the painting Night from the peak period of work of Karel Černý, one of the most highly regarded Czech painters of the 20th century. This motif had attracted the artist since his youth, not only as a symbol of the war years but above all as a source of mysterious and romantic atmosphere. Night scenes thus became characteristic of his paintings, featuring lovers, urban silhouettes, and the striking presence of a full moon. In 1947, the journal Český život [Czech Life] even referred to him as a “painter of the night”.

In this canvas, Černý brings together two of his typical elements – a couple locked in embrace and a night sky illuminated by a bright moon. The interior, with open shutters, is flooded with moonlight entering the room, where a pair of lovers recline on a chaise longue, their simplified forms defined by firm outlines. The moonlight creates dramatic contrasts that heighten the impact of the scene. The composition is built primarily through colour, transitioning from dark blacks and purples in the foreground to the radiant white of the full moon. The work also demonstrates Černý’s distinctive approach to modern realism, combining simplified cubist impulses with an imaginative poetic sensibility. The harmonious composition rests on a balance of light and shadow and on the geometric simplification of forms, lending the painting a monumental quality regardless of its size.

In the 1940s, Černý firmly established himself among the painters of his generation, and his works attracted the attention of both the public and collectors. This painting, for example, was the only colour reproduction included in the catalogue of the exhibition at Topič Salon in 1948, thanks to the support of the prominent collector JUDr. Jaroslav Borovička. The work was presented at solo exhibitions (Karel Černý, Topič Salon, Prague, 3–28 November 1948, cat. No. 2; Karel Černý: Selection from the Work, Prague City Gallery, March 1986, cat. No. 56) and reproduced in monographs (J. Borovička: Karel Černý, Prague 1948, n.p.; V. Lahoda: Karel Černý 1910–1960: Colour and Existence. Catalogue Raisonné of the Paintings, Prague 2003, p. 192, fig. 148; V. Lahoda: Karel Černý, Prague 1994, p. 76, fig. 69). It was assessed in consultation with Prof. J. Zemina and PhDr. J. Machalický. An expert opinion of PhDr. K. Srp is attached (quoted: “[…] Night ranks among Černý’s finest works, which remained in a private collection for a long time and can now be viewed again after many years. It is imbued with the artist’s melancholy and, beyond its high artistic value, possesses a strong emotional resonance. Černý was an exceptional figure, an artist who transcends the local context and awaits recognition within European painting. […]”).
