Adam Štech is a contemporary Czech painter who lives and works in Prague. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in the studios of Jiří Sopko and Vladimír Skrepl, and also spent part of his studies in Portugal. In his work, he connects historical artistic styles such as Baroque, Cubism, or Expressionism with a modern language and irony – deconstructing images and reassembling them into new, playful compositions. He received the Critics’ Award for Young Painting (2011) and exhibits both in the Czech Republic and abroad, for example at the Václav Špála Gallery, DOX, or Ascaso Gallery in the USA. In the painting Bigfoot we see the encounter of nature, mythology, and faith. Domestic animals represent a natural part of human life. The Ascension symbolizes transcendence toward the divine, while Bigfoot stands as a figure both mythological, like the gods, and at the same time a being on the boundary between the human and the animal. Paul Klee wrote: “There are two mountains on which it is bright and clear: the mountain of the animals and the mountain of the gods. But between them lies the shadowy valley of humankind.”
