The meditative pastel by Václav Boštík represents the artist’s work of the 1980s, when he explored visual perception and the aesthetic effects of the artwork. Boštík’s main ambition was to create works imbued with purity and light, embodying the transcendental beauty described by Thomas Aquinas, whose source lies beyond the artwork itself. Although Boštík was concerned with the sensory effects of his works, his paintings are permeated with a strong spiritual intensity that cannot be perceived with the naked eye. The effect of radiant light emanating from the work is enhanced by the chosen pastel technique, through which the artist achieved subtle, almost imperceptible transitions between shades of yellow and orange. This perfect unity of light is complemented by points arranged in an ideal geometric form – the square – which symbolizes the solid foundation of all existence.
